Browser Cleanup

Here are ways to clean up your browser:

  1. Close tabs you are not working in and/or pin them if you need access often.
  2. Delete bookmarks you no longer need.
  3. Clear web browser history/cache.
  4. Remove unused extensions.
  5. Delete downloads on your computer.

How to pin or bookmark a browser page:

Google Chrome & Firefox on Windows & Macintosh

  1. Open Google Chrome in your usual manner.
  2. Navigate to the website you want to add to your bookmarks bar (e.g., google.com)
  3. Macintosh: Click on the bookmarks menu and choose “Bookmark this page.” Windows: Click on the star to the right of the address bar.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Navigate to Settings and then to favorites (star icon).
  2. Select “Add this page to favorites.”
  3. Rename the favorite and/or choose a folder to drop it into.

How to remove a bookmark from a page:

Google Chrome & Firefox on Windows & Macintosh

  1. Navigate to the bookmark and/or folder you want to remove.
  2. Right-click on the bookmark and/or folder.
  3. Select delete.

Microsoft Edge:

  1. Click on favorites (star icon) in the menu bar.
  2. Click on the favorite and/or folder you want to delete.
  3. Right-click and select delete.

How to clear your browser history/cache:

NOTE: Clearing your history can log you out of web pages.

Google Chrome:

  1. Click “History” in the menu bar.
  2. Click “Full history.”
  3. Then select “Clear browser data.”
  4. Select “Basic,” and the following items are the most important:
  5. Browsing History
  6. Download History
  7. Cookies and other site data
  8. Cached images and files

Firefox:

  1. Click “History” in the menu bar.
  2. Click “Clear browsing history.”
  3. Select the following:
  4. Browsing and download history
  5. Cookies
  6. Cache
  7. Forms & search history

Edge:

  1. Select “Settings and more” icon (…)
  2. Select “Settings.”
  3. Then click “Privacy, search, and services.”
  4. Scroll to the bottom and choose what to clear:
  5. Browsing history
  6. Download history
  7. Cookies and other site data
  8. Cached images and files
  9. Click “Clear now” button.

How to remove downloads saved to your browser:

Chrome

  1. On the menu bar, click “Window.”
  2. Then select “Downloads.”
  3. Then click the X and remove them.

Firefox

  1. On the menu bar, select “History.”
  2. Select “Show full history.”
  3. Then select “Downloads.”
  4. Remove the downloads.

Edge

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. In the upper-right corner, select the “Hub” button.
  3. Click the icon that looks like a down arrow.
  4. You can delete each file individually by clicking next to the file entry. Or, you can delete all files by clicking the “Clear all” option.
